Newscenter Media News As part of a shift in emphasis towards greater use of artificial intelligence in content regulation, social media giant TikTok announced on Friday that it is laying off hundreds of workers from its global workforce, including several employees in Malaysia.
Over 700 positions were eliminated in Malaysia, according to two sources who were previously briefed on the situation by Reuters. Less than 500 employees in China were impacted, according to a later clarification from TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance.

Many of these layoffs would affect workers in Malaysia, where around 700 job losses initially surfaced according to a recent report published by Reuters.
To check material uploaded on its site, the social media platform now combines human moderators with automated detection technologies.
“We’re making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further strengthen our global operating model for content moderation,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement.
