Newscenter Media News The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened, with the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Tony Okocha, calling on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to either resign or face impeachment.
Okocha made this declaration while criticizing the governor’s recent invitation to the 27 lawmakers recognized by the Supreme Court as the legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He dismissed the move as insincere, labeling it a “Greek gift.”
Governor Fubara had extended the invitation via a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, following the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming the lawmakers’ legitimacy.
However, speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha questioned the governor’s sudden change of stance after months of defiance.

“The APC remains the major opposition party in Rivers State. We are the voice of the voiceless. When we said Siminalayi Fubara was clueless, we were not joking. The evidence is clear,” Okocha stated.
He went on to accuse the governor of not only violating the law but also disregarding President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the state’s political crisis. According to Okocha, Tinubu had introduced an eight-point resolution to restore stability in Rivers, but Fubara failed to implement most of it.
“The governor behaves like a saint, but he is a dangerous snake. His meeting agenda with the lawmakers is puerile. Is he inviting them to discuss the Supreme Court judgment? And why was the invitation letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government instead of the governor himself? It’s an aberration. As far as I’m concerned, it is a Greek Gift,” Okocha remarked.
He further insisted that Fubara’s leadership was leading the state toward collapse and that APC would not stand by and watch.
“The options before Siminalayi Joseph Fubara are two: he should honourably resign or be impeached because he has run the state aground and disrespected Mr. President,” Okocha warned.
He dismissed any potential compromise, stressing that the Supreme Court ruling was final and that the governor had no alternative but to step down.
“If he refuses to resign, he will be impeached. I don’t need to be a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly to know the numerous impeachable offences he has committed. There is no government in Rivers State,” he asserted.
Okocha also warned that Fubara’s continued stay in office could trigger a crisis, saying, “The State is already sitting on a keg of gunpowder, and with a little spark, it will explode. So, let (Fubara) honourably resign.”
The political tension in Rivers State remains high as both sides brace for the next phase of the ongoing power struggle.
