Police probe alleged sexual assault of two-year-old girl in Rivers

A 45-year-old man, simply identified as Udohika, is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Port Harcourt for his alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a two-year-old girl.

The incident reportedly occurred on Gada Street, Ogbu-Nabali, in Port Harcourt City Council area of the state. According to sources, the suspect, an electronic technician, allegedly took advantage of the child when his business partner stepped out. He reportedly shared a store with someone on the same street and had used the opportunity to lure the girl in.

It was learnt that the father of the survivor became aware of her predicament when she started to complain of pains in her vagina when he was bathing her.

Upon interrogation, the teenage girl demonstrated how allegedly the suspect often touched her vagina when nobody was around. The child also led her father to identify the shop which is located at the front of their compound.

It was also learnt that the girl’s father, who lost his wife during her birth, made a formal complaint at the Old GRA Police Division. Consequently, personnel of the division arrested the suspect last Friday.

Speaking on the incident, a rights advocate and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, urged the police to carry out a thorough and unbiased investigation to ascertain the veracity of the claims made by the father of the child, since information available suggested that the suspect denied the allegation.

“If the suspect is found culpable in the course of the investigation, he should be made to face the law,” he said. The spokesperson, Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect, said he had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt, for discreet investigation.
