Newscenter Media News Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied allegations of inciting Nigerians with his New Year message, which he said was a heartfelt attempt to address the nation’s pressing issues.
In a post on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Obi revealed that his remarks have led to threats against his life and family, describing the backlash as an effort to silence critical voices in the country.
“Have I really crossed the line?” Obi asked. “My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, one Mr. Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.”
The controversy stems from Obi’s New Year address, delivered at a press conference in Abuja titled “Nigeria Needs Selfless and Exemplary Leadership.”
In his remarks, the former governor of Anambra State criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its inability to tackle the country’s mounting economic and security crises.

Obi called for “vigorous, positive actions” to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, noting that many citizens were losing hope. His speech resonated with supporters but drew sharp criticism from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a scathing statement, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka accused Obi of hypocrisy and incitement, describing his remarks as “misleading” and “aimed at scoring cheap political points.”
“It is a thing of irony that Obi, who now arrogates to himself to be omniscient and a philosopher’s stone when it comes to our nation’s challenges, left no record of significant achievement, let alone transformation of any kind, in his eight-year tenure as Governor of Anambra State,” Morka said.
Despite the criticism, Obi remains unwavering in his stance, emphasizing that his comments were made in good faith and in the interest of Nigeria’s progress.
“If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum,” he said. “However, I will not be silenced in my resolve to speak truthfully, especially as our nation continues to drift toward undemocratic practices.”
Obi’s response has reignited conversations about leadership and free speech in Nigeria, with many Nigerians questioning whether his criticisms are part of constructive discourse or an effort to undermine the government.
For others, the threats against Obi highlight the challenges faced by those who dare to speak truth to power in a country grappling with deep political and economic instability.
