‘Okowa has nothing to hide’, aide dismisses reports of EFCC arrest

Olisa Ifeajika, former chief press secretary to Ifeanyi Okowa, on Wednesday, came to the defense of the ex-governor of Delta State, dismissing claims that he diverted public funds during his eight-year tenure.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently arrested Okowa over allegations of diverting N1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds and using public funds to acquire properties in Asaba and Abuja.

Ifeajika, in a press statement, described the allegations as “gross misrepresentations and distortions of the facts” and a “campaign of calumny” orchestrated by politicians who see Okowa as a threat to their 2027 aspirations.

According to Ifeajika, the EFCC has yet to establish a case against Okowa, who voluntarily presented himself for questioning upon returning from vacation.

Ifeajika addressed specific allegations, stating that Okowa cleared himself of accusations related to acquiring an 80% stake in Premium Trust Bank and building housing estates and hotels in Asaba and Abuja.

He noted that the Abuja estate is owned by a public figure, while Okowa resides in his private house in an Asaba estate.

“The owners of the hotels in Asaba are persons known to the public and the EFCC, while Okowa has zero financial interest in Premium Trust Bank,” Ifeajika said. “These are facts that are easily verifiable from the Corporate Affairs Commission and by virtue of the Freedom of Information Act.”

Ifeajika emphasized Okowa’s commitment to transparency, stating that he “has nothing to hide” and governed the state with “fiscal discipline, prudent management of resources, and excellent service delivery.”

He welcomed an honest investigation into Okowa’s tenure, believing it would vindicate his “exemplary stewardship” of the state.

“Dr. Okowa is a man of unassailable integrity,” Ifeajika said. “We welcome any honest attempt to investigate his eight-year tenure as we believe it will vindicate his exemplary stewardship of the state.”
