NASA spots sizeable asteroid which may hit Earth in 2032

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a US space agency, has spotted an asteroid 2024 YR4, which may impact Earth on December 22, 2032.

The asteroid, which was spotted on December 27, 2024, ranges from about 130 feet to 330 feet across, enough to cause severe harm if it collides with our planet.

The asteroid, which might be as large as a football field, has a better than 1% probability of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032, according to astronomers.

This object has a 1.2% chance of colliding, according to automated warning systems utilized by astronomers at the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System station in Chile.

But according to statistics from the European counterpart of the NASA JPL Center for NEO Studies (CNEOS), the likelihood of the asteroid striking Earth had increased slightly, to 1.6%.

Additionally, there is not much time left to improve orbital calculations and determine if an impact is likely or unlikely, according to CNEOS Director Paul Chodas.

“We need larger and larger telescopes to observe this object. By mid-April, he says, “it will be too faint to be detected.”
