Liverpool have claimed the top spot of the Champions League league phase despite losing their final game against PSV in the Netherlands on Wednesday night.
The Reds, who had won their opening seven matches, fell to a 3-2 defeat to the Dutch champions after leading twice but conceding twice at the end of the first half in the game.
But Barcelona’s failure to beat Atalanta meant Arne Slot’s team finished top on 21 points, two ahead of their nearest rivals.
Liverpool are joined in the top eight by two other Premier League teams – Arsenal and Aston Villa – to progress directly to the last-16.
Meanwhile, heavyweights like Manchester City, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern all made the playoffs as they couldn’t seal automatic spots.
Liverpool’s last-16 opponents will be the winners of a play-off involving Paris St-Germain, Benfica, Monaco and Brest.
