Newscenter Media News The former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau and his colleagues in the League of Northern Democrats (LND) have unveiled ambitious plans to rebrand the group into a national political party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group aims to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its convener, Dr. Umar Ardo, the group declared its intention to evolve into the League of National Democrats by fostering alliances with southern political figures who share its vision of good governance and reform.
Ardo accused the APC and PDP of presiding over decades of failed governance that have entrenched poverty, insecurity, and public disillusionment.
He said: “The PDP and APC, along with other existing political parties, have not only failed to address Nigeria’s fundamental challenges but have also shown no sign of ever doing so.”
He pointed out that both parties, particularly since the Obasanjo presidency, have devolved into platforms of self-service and manipulation where personal ambition trumps merit and competence.
– Governance Failures: Ardo cited systemic corruption, institutional decay, and socio-economic stagnation as direct consequences of APC and PDP’s leadership styles.
– Deepening Public Frustration: “These parties have consistently produced leaders more interested in consolidating power than addressing the socio-economic realities of Nigerians,” he added, painting a grim picture of a nation trapped in a cycle of despair.
The convener described the LND as a “beacon of hope” for a country desperate for change, noting that the group’s core values are rooted in democracy, institutional renewal, and patriotism.

The strategy is bold but methodical:
– Building Alliances Across the South: The LND aims to expand its reach by instigating a similar movement in southern Nigeria, ultimately merging both factions into the League of National Democrats.
– Becoming a Registered Political Party:The final step would be formal registration with INEC, creating a unified platform capable of contesting and winning elections.
“Unlike the PDP and APC, LND’s foundation will be committed to restoring patriotism, honesty, and democratic values in the polity,” Ardo asserted.

The emergence of the LND could dramatically alter Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the north, where Shekarau and his allies wield significant influence.
