Newscenter Media News Former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has openly backed the possible impeachment of his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, arguing that such an action would not constitute a criminal offense.
During a live media chat on Wednesday, Wike dismissed concerns over Fubara’s political troubles, insisting that if the governor had done anything warranting impeachment, the state assembly had every right to proceed.
Taking a critical stance on the political crisis rocking Rivers State, Wike questioned the legitimacy of lawmakers loyal to Fubara, indirectly referring to them as “three lawmakers” who, according to him, lack the authority to legislate.
“Politics is not play. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offense,” Wike stated.
He went further to express disbelief at the legal arguments being advanced in Fubara’s defense.
“I cannot believe that in this country, we are now at the point where Nigerians are talking about where three members of the House will sit and make a law, and they are talking about going to the Supreme Court. Do we need to go to work?”

The political tension in Rivers escalated after the Supreme Court validated the status of 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike while also nullifying the controversial local government elections conducted in the state in October 2024.
Wike applauded those who, in his view, had fought against illegality, emphasizing that elected officials should not be treated as subordinates.
“Speakers and Assembly members are not our children; they were elected; they are not your boys or your girls. You sit with them and play with them. I travelled with my Speakers, and I created relationships. It’s not a master-servant thing,” he said.
Wike also recalled the role of elder statesman Ferdinand Alabararba in supporting the emergence of an Ijaw governor, only to later suffer disrespect from the very person he helped.
“This elder statesman cried; he almost cried. This boy later insulted this elder statesman; now he can’t go back to him for help. Ordinarily, these are the people who will call the family people. Forget about me,” Wike added.
Wike’s comments underscore the deepening power struggle in Rivers State, with the battle lines between his loyalists and Fubara’s camp becoming more pronounced.
