Newscenter Media News Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, former Kano State governor, on Monday, criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an interview on Channels TV’s “Sunrise Daily.”
“The EFCC should not behave like typical security guards, hiding and waiting to arrest offenders. This approach won’t solve corruption. They must change tactics,” Shekarau urged.
He also cited the Yahaya Bello incident, saying, “The recent drama between EFCC and Kogi’s former governor is embarrassing. It showcases the commission’s inefficiency.”
Shekarau further emphasized, “EFCC’s role is prevention, not ambush. Proactive measures, transparency and accountability are crucial.
“Internal reform is vital. EFCC must prioritize intelligence gathering. Combatting corruption demands strategic collaboration, not isolation. Nigerians deserve better. EFCC must regain public trust.”

Earlier, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it has recovered over N200bn and made about 3,000 convictions in one year under the leadership of Ola Olukoyede.
Ripples Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu appointed Olukoyede as the chairman of the anti-graft agency in October 2023.
Since then, the spokesman of the EFCC Wilson Uwujaren said the commission has recorded successes in the fight against corruption in the country.
“In terms of recoveries and convictions which are usually the attention of the media, he has also done a lot in terms of one year,” Uwujaren said on Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s breakfast show The Morning Brief.
“In terms of naira recovery, we have recovered over N200bn in one year of Ola Olukoyede’s administration. That is not to talk about the dollar and the euro components of the recoveries. The figures are actually humongous. In terms of the conviction returns, we have over 3,000 convictions in one year of his administration. That for us is interesting.”
