Ex-Abia commissioner warns PDP leadership against undermining party’s prospects

A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former Abia State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Chief Don Ubani, has cautioned the national leadership of the party against unhealthy decisions capable of undermining its electoral prospects.

Ubani noted that moves to sanction members who worked against the party in the 2023 elections will end up in recriminations and ridicule.

He insisted that the leadership must make concerted efforts to reconcile and reunite party members, including those who left the former ruling party in Abia State out of substantial perception of injustice.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Abia PDP chieftain said, “The National Executive Committee of the PDP is thinking of punishing members who worked against the party in 2023; it would start with those who worked against the zoning policy of the party.

“It is not only in the presidential election that some highly placed members of PDP worked against the party.

“In the 2023 general election, it was evident that some very prominent members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP openly canvassed against the party’s House of Representatives candidates in their federal constituencies. The records are clear.

“Who amongst members of the National Working Committee of the PDP, National Executive Committee or Board of Trustees would preside over any committee that would investigate accusations of sabotage against the PDP member(s)?”

He added, “In a situation where every member is culpable, it will be very ridiculous and, of course, shameful, setting up any committee with the aim of indicting any other members.

“As long as 2023 general election was concerned, more than 95 per cent of PDP leaders lived in glass houses and, so, it would be preposterous making any attempt to throw stones. The damages would be collateral.

“The party should be honest and bold enough to say the 2027 presidential ticket of the party will be zoned to the South but with specification on Southeast zone.

“For goodness sake, except Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has vowed to remain a dog in the manger, he should realize that the odds against him will always overwhelm his presidential ambition, even beyond 2031.”
