The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) said it has scaled up efforts to protect people of the region from the imminent cholera outbreak across the country.
The Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, said the commission has begun a major water project aimed at connecting all communities in the region to enable people have access to good water.
Ogbuku disclosed this at the weekend, in Port Harcourt, ahead of the Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit slated for July 10 to 13, 2023.
The NDDC boss noted that the region is prone to flooding, expressing worry that the floods have started already in some parts of the country and will soon get to the region.
To mitigate the problems associated with flooding menace, especially cholera, the NDDC boss said that the commission is proactive in its measures of providing potable water to communities.
He said: “The Niger Delta region is prone to flooding; soon the floods will be coming; so, we are proactive not to wait for the cholera outbreak to ravage our people. That’s why we have embarked on a project to ensure all communities in the region have access to good water.”
MEANWHILE, medical experts have warned residents of Bauchi to beware of unhealthy food and drinks prepared in an unhygienic environment, particularly meat and fruits exposed to microorganisms associated with cholera.
The Guardian observed that meat sellers at Muda Lawal and Wunti markets do not protect their meat from flies, even as they make their sales beside major roads. It was observed that the meat was placed on the table, while hundreds of flies perched on them, laying eggs on the meat.
It was gathered that there have not been regulatory efforts in 28 states in the country where cholera is ravaging communities, including Bauchi.
Although the Executive Chairman of the state Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, dismissed the Federal Government’s data about cholera.
