Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, charged security agencies to wake up to their responsibility of ensuring the security of citizens, stressing that the spate of kidnapping has become unbearable.
In a statement, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, lamented that even journalists have become victims of abduction and assault in the course of duty.
This came as a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Takai Shamang, was abducted from his hometown of Biniki in Kaura Local Council of Kaduna State.
Shamang, 78, was also a one-time President General of the National Union of Electricity and Gas Workers, now National Union of Electricity Employees, between 1982 and 1989.
Confirming the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), his daughter, Mrs Grace Abbin, said her septugenarian father was kidnapped around 8.00 p.m. on Saturday.
Atiku said: “In these perilous times, the courageous sentinels of truth, our journalists, stand as beacons of light, unwavering in their duty to hold power accountable. Yet, they find themselves besieged not only by the terror of abductors, but also by a government that continues to assault their freedom through arrests and detention.
“Adding to this travesty is the kidnap of 78-year-old Mr Takai Shamang, President and Founder of Gantys Aid for Widows, Orphans and Needy Foundation (GAWON) and former President General of the National Union of Electricity and Gas Workers (now known as the National Union of Electricity Employees) between 1982 and 1989.”
MEANWHILE, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the abduction of two media personnel and their families in Kaduna, demanding their immediate release.
State Council of the union said that it received with shock decried the “brazen and barbaric attack by suspected kidnappers that resulted in the abduction of the Kaduna Correspondents of The Nation Newspaper and The Blue Print Newspaper alongside their families last night at their residences in Danhono area of Kaduna metropolis.”
In a statement issued and signed by the Council Chairman, Asmau Yawo Halilu, and the Secretary, Gambo Santos Sanga, the union condemned “the ugly incident and appeal to security agencies in the state to swing into action with a view to rescuing the journalists and their families from the kidnappers.”
