Newscenter Media News Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has warned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting dangerously powerful while citing potential unforeseen dangers it may cause in the future.
Schmidt said in an interview with ABC News on Monday that it is more concerning because the world is moving toward a time when “every person is going to have the equivalent of a polymath in their pocket” and “we’re soon going to be able to have computers running on their own, deciding what they want to do.”
He also discussed the increasing use of AI-powered drones in warfare, with the stipulation that humans must stay informed and exercise “meaningful” control.

Speaking against the backdrop of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Schmidt claimed that drones had become much more prevalent in combat because they can be used for observation and to dump explosives without requiring people to approach the front line.
“The correct model, and obviously war is horrific, is to have the people well behind and have the weapons well up front, and have them networked and controlled by AI,” Schmidt said. “The future of war is AI, networked drones of many different kinds.”
He states in his ABC interview that it could be worthwhile to consider turning off the AI systems when they start to “improve” on their own. But he continues, “Theoretically, we’d better have someone in charge of the plug because AI could grow dangerously strong.”
